In this experience, you will learn how to make a Tsugaru Kokeshi doll from a genuine Kokeshi artisan.

Kokeshi are a traditional style of Japanese doll. They are made of wood and usually have no hands or legs. One of the 11 historical styles of Kokeshi is the Tsugaru Kokeshi doll, which is a handicraft native to Aomori Prefecture. Tsugaru Kokeshi differ from other Kokeshi styles in that they are made entirely out of a single piece of wood. 

As part of this activity, you will work with a trained artisan to create your own style of Tsugaru Kokeshi. After learning all about Kokeshi and watching them carve your doll from wood, you will then work closely under their guidance to paint a Kokeshi doll of your own design.

At the end of the activity, you will have your own Kokeshi doll souvenir! And, as a special extra activity, the craftsperson will also show you how to spin your Kokeshi doll on a spinning top!
