◆ Look around the Yuba Senmaruya Store, a shop specializing in the Japanese specialty of Yuba tofu skin
◆ Pray for success at Nishiki Tenmangu Shrine, a popular shrine dedicated to academic achievement
◆ Walk Teramachi Shopping Street and stop by its many shops selling art, clothing, books, souvenirs, religious goods, and more

Nishiki Market
If you need a break from temple hopping, Nishiki Market is the place to visit. Located in the center of Kyoto, the 400-meter-long market is lined with over 130 shops selling Kyoto specialties, vegetables, dried and pickled foods, fish, and more. In fact, it has such a staggering variety of products that it is known as "the kitchen of Kyoto", and some of the establishments – many of them specializing in only one item – have been in the vicinity for over 400 years.

Yuba Senmaruya Store
Yuba Senmaruya is a 210-year-old store specializing in yuba, or tofu skin, a specialty of the Kyoto region. This savory food product is a staple in Kyoto home cooking, as well as a common item in traditional Japanese course meals. At the store, you will be able to see how yuba is made and see all the different varieties of this unique foodstuff.

Nishiki Tenmangu Shrine
Nishiki Tenmangu Shrine has a history of over 1,000 years, and despite its small size, it is one of the most popular religious facilities in the area. Nestled within the urban atmosphere, it is a peaceful respite after a walk around the market, and a surprisingly natural oasis with both spring water and plum trees found in the area. The facility enshrines Tenjin, the Shinto deity for academics and business, so it is a great place to visit before an exam or business deal.

Teramachi Shopping Street
Teramachi Shopping Street forms the majority of Kyoto’s main shopping district. On the street, there remains a lot of traditional shops and galleries that showcase traditional Japanese culture. One famous example of these is Daishodo, a historical store dedicated to Japanese woodblock prints called ukiyo-e. To the street’s east side, a new road has also been built, where more modern businesses, such as souvenirs shops, restaurants and fashion stores can also be found. The entire area is a perfect symbol of Kyoto’s modern and traditional atmosphere.
