Kurashiki Walking Tour

S003

Kurashiki is located between Osaka and Hiroshima, and can be reached from either in about an hour and a half.
The city of Kurashiki prospered during the Edo period (1603-1867) as a port under the direct control of the government. Clusters of white-walled merchant houses were formed on the canals drawn in from the sea. After the Meiji period (1868-1912), with the development of the spinning industry, Kurashiki became a “textile town” with the largest annual shipment of textiles in Japan. Here, Western-style architecture proliferated and was developed further through the combination of Japanese tradition and Western technology. Even during the postwar period of modernization, efforts were made to protect the architecture, and the aesthetic sense of this area was formed.
