Japanese Sweets Making Workshop <Home Visit>

Get a taste of authentic Japanese culture in this sweet making workshop hosted at a genuine Tokyo home. Along with your expert host, make two classic Japanese sweet confections, nerikiri and taiyaki, and learn all about history and philosophies behind Japanese sweets.

WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT

In this program, you will learn to make two different kinds of traditional Japanese sweets in the comfort of a private Japanese home.

In the first half of the program, you will create nerikiri. Nerikiri are a white bean paste based confection that are almost always made by hand. They have a history that reaches back over 300 years and a delicate sweetness that dissolves in the mouth. Intended to please the eye as much as the palate, they are crafted to reflect Japanese nature and the four seasons. As such, there are many different varieties of nerikiri and they are often described as an edible artform. Nerikiri are often served as an accompaniment to bitter matcha green tea in traditional tea ceromonies. 

In our program's second half, you will be making taiyaki, which is a pancake type confection stuffed with sweet bean paste, chocolate or other fillings. Taiyaki are shaped like "tai", or sea bream, a fish deemed lucky in Japan, and are frequently enjoyed at Japanese festivals. 

As you create your sweet confections, our professional host will tell you all about the history and culture behind these tasty treats. You will then sit down to enjoy your treats as a delicious snack.
